Fadillah: Malaysia could go nuclear within 10 years, if public gives green light
KUCHING, Aug 3 — The government is studying the possibility of implementing nuclear energy projects in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah due to the high demand for stable energy in both regions, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), said the suitability of locations near water sources such as rivers, seas or large lakes was a key consideration in the ongoing feasibility study for nuclear plant cooling systems. 'For Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, nuclear projects are viable because what we need now is a constant energy source. 'In Sarawak, there is no issue because hydropower already contributes almost 70 per cent, while in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, hydropower resources are not as abundant due to their heavier reliance on gas and diesel, which are still based on non-clean sources,' he told reporters after officiating the MUSCS Pickleball Arena here today. He said no final decisions had been made regarding the technology, location or capacity to be used, as the government was still conducting a comprehensive study coordinated by MyPower Corporation, the implementing agency of the National Nuclear Energy Programme. Fadillah said in addition to technical requirements, the study would also examine the most suitable technology, development of local expertise, safety aspects, environmental impact, and the overall financing capability of the project. 'All of these aspects must be carefully assessed. Only when we are satisfied and the public accepts the use of nuclear energy will we proceed to finalise the implementation… our projection is that the earliest it could be implemented is within the next 10 years,' he said. He added that the government was also exploring new technologies such as small modular reactors (SMRs) and was planning several working visits abroad to identify the best, safest, and most cost-effective technologies for Malaysia. 'That's why I visited Russia and France, and God willing, I will also visit South Korea, Japan, China, and finally the United States,' he said. Yesterday, PETRA said in a statement that nuclear energy development was being studied as a clean, stable and competitive energy source for Malaysia's future, with a gradual approach based on International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) guidelines. — Bernama

Penang defers water tariff adjustment to July 2026

(Envato Elements pic) GEORGE TOWN : Penang has deferred the implementation of the water tariff adjustment under the tariff setting mechanism for the second implementation period by one year to July 1, 2026. Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the deferment would benefit 715,957 water consumers in the state. He said the new tariff, which was supposed to take effect today, is expected to increase the Penang Water Supply Corporation's revenue by about RM20 million over six months in 2026. The extra revenue will be used for water supply service upgrade projects, the details of which will be announced later, he said in a statement today. 'For the new tariff, the average increase in monthly water bills for 79.88% of the 613,660 domestic (household) consumers in Penang who use up to 35 cubic metres per month will be between RM0.30 and RM2.55. 'The average increase in water bills for 95.38% of the 98,155 non-domestic (business) consumers in Penang who use up to 200 cubic metres per month will be between RM3.60 and RM35.70 per month,' he said. Yesterday, the media reported that water tariffs for domestic consumers in almost all states in Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan would be raised from Aug 1, following the gazetting of the new water tariff structure announced by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN). The tariff adjustment involves an average rise of 20 sen per cubic metre, bringing the new rate to RM2.75 compared to RM2.55 previously. However, this adjustment does not involve domestic users in Perak. SPAN previously said that the implementation of the new tariffs was part of efforts towards a more sustainable water tariff structure, while enabling state water operators to better cover the operational and maintenance costs of water supply systems. Chow also announced the appointment of 19 new commissioners to the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (HEB) for the term of Aug 1, 2025 to July 31, 2026. He said state housing and environment committee chairman S Sundarajoo had been appointed as the executive councillor in charge of coordinating matters related to HEB on behalf of the state government. 'Congratulations are in order, and it is hoped that HEB will continue to uphold its mandate and empower the socio-economic development of the Indian community in the state,' he said. Those appointed also included Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, senator Dr A Lingeshwaran, Bagan Dalam assemblyman K Kumaran, Batu Uban assemblyman A Kumaresan, and Penang MIC chairman J Dhinagaran.
